HOW TO UNCLOG A SINK: TIPS AND TRICKS
Have you ever had a clogged sink? Maybe that of the bathroom, in a difficult place to drain? If you want to avoid to call a plumber, try these tricks before:
This should be the first solution to implement. Easy to use, the plunger is usually already present at home. Collect a little ‘water in the sink concerned and then try to clean it, applying the suction cup on the drain by pressing and releasing several times. If you’re lucky, what you plug in your sink (often leftover food or hair depending on the room) will come out. If not, try the following solution.
If the suction cup does not work, try the plunger spring. It is a spring of different lengths (2, 5 or 7 or 10 centimeters) that costs a few euros (from 4€ up). It must be inserted into the drain and then be turned with the appropriate crank. The spring should thus destroy the obstruction or the latter does entangle in the spring and will be recovered once you get it out of the drain. If things do not improve, proceed to the next solution
If the spring has not given any effect, try using a plunger liquid that can be found in every supermarket for a cost of 10 euros or more. Pay attention to the instructions because they are chemical and corrosive materials. They can be dangerous if they come into contact with the skin or eyes and are not environmentally friendly. Sometimes, however, we are forced to use them. They must usually be poured into the drain and must be left for a few minutes to act. Then, just open the water and hope it gushes. If even the chemicals have not been able to solve the traffic congestion, there is only one option left.
This is the last resort and is the most expensive (but less expensive than a plumber’s intervention). It can cost from 40 to 100 euros and could save you from shelling out a lot more. Be sure to buy a model that can suck wet. Then follow the instructions on how to fit the suitable filter, put the suction tube on the drain and … suck! If you are lucky, the filling should be finished inside your bin and your drain will be free. If the tube is in a place that is easy to reach and if you are using tools, you can try to open the tube and remove the obturation, if present.
If none of the advice above was useful, there is nothing left to do but contact a good plumber and hope for a light fee.
